Watercolor Paintings

Care of Artwork

I hope the following information will help you enjoy your painting for many years!

I paint using artist quality watercolor paints that are rated extremely permanent or permanent, on 100% cotton rag, acid free watercolor paper. The mats are cut from museum quality acid free mat board. The paintings are backed with either an acid free backer board or with acid free barrier paper.

When hanging your painting, consider whether people will be sitting or standing when viewing the piece. A general suggestion is to hang the painting at or slightly above eye level, or approximately 6’6” from the floor to the top of the painting. If the piece is hung above furnishings, position the bottom of the painting one foot or less above the furnishings so that the two will be seen as a unit.

When choosing a location for your painting, think about the amount and duration of light that will fall on the piece. Ultraviolet rays, found in all light and heat, escalate the aging process of pigments, dyes and paper. Do not hang your painting in either direct sunlight or intense artificial light.

Avoid extremes in temperature. Hang your painting away from all direct heat sources, such as radiators, vents, or working fireplaces. Do not leave in a hot car or car trunk. Avoid excessively cold or damp locations, such as near an outside door or in a bathroom. Works on paper can suffer irreversible damage in humidity over seventy percent.

Dust with a clean, dry, soft brush. If you need to clean the glazing, determine if it is glass or plexi-glass. Only plexi-glass cleaner should be used on plexi-glass glazing. Spray the appropriate cleaner onto a soft dust cloth and then clean the glazing. Do not spray the glazing directly.

Unframed works on paper should be stored flat, and protected by layers of acid-free paper. Do not place anything directly on or touch the surface of the painting.

Most important of all, hang your paintings where you will enjoy them!
